Broncos tight end Virgil Green could “shatter” his career highs in every receiving category in 2016 according to Andrew Mason of denverbroncos.com.
It will not take much to “shatter” Green’s career high as the 27-year-old has never had more than 12 catches in a single season in his five years in Denver. Mason’s point seems to be that the Broncos plan to give Green every opportunity to win the No.1 tight end job. Green no longer has to compete with the likes of Julius Thomas, Vernon Davis, or Owen Daniels for touches but it should be noted that he has been given chances to earn a bigger role in the passing game before in his career and has not yet taken advantage. He has, however, developed into probably the premier blocker at his position in the NFL.
Green will likely have a secure place on the Broncos roster for several more seasons due to his blocking ability but it seems unlikely that he will become a receiving phenom at this point in his career. Having said that, who would have predicted the breakout season of Cleveland Browns TE Gary Barnidge at age 30 in 2015? Stranger things have happened but Jeff Heuerman is still a better bet to lead the Broncos’ tight ends in targets in 2016.
