The Denver Post talks today about the team possibly being on “HBO’s Hard Knocks” this summer if the show asked them. Sounds like from the comment the Broncos are a long way away from being on TV for what has become “must see TV” on the cable channel.
The current Broncos regime, with Elway as the team’s executive vice president of football operations, and Fox as coach, has been more aware of the public side of their jobs than McDaniels cared to be.
Elway has used Twitter, the team put short snippets of the coaching candidates on its website during the interview process and the Broncos, as an organization, have made reconnecting with their fans a priority.
But Fox is still an old-school coach at heart, having broken into the NFL on Chuck Noll’s staff in Pittsburgh, so it would be a fairly huge step for him to invite the cameras of “Hard Knocks” into the team business. And that kind of step doesn’t appear to be on the horizon.
If owner Pat Bowlen decided he wanted to do it, the Broncos certainly would find a way. But Bowlen has always let his coaches make the decisions on items like the structure of training camp, as well as how coaches interact with the players.
If, for example, Fox wanted to take future training camps out of Denver once again, the team would likely give it heavy consideration.
But the Buccaneers did not sell out a single home game last season, despite a 10-6 finish. And with one of the youngest teams in the league, the Buccaneers likely see a business benefit to building, or enhancing, interest in their team.
The Broncos are coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history and are trying to re-engage many of their fans, but “Hard Knocks” is still a big step they are not poised to take at the moment.
