Broncos Can’t Clinch Division; Fall to Bills 30-23

The Buffalo Bills created more work for the Denver Broncos on Sunday, denying them the AFC West title. With temperatures frequently falling into single digits, Buffalo defeated Denver 30-23 in the second coldest game in Denver’s history. The Broncos performance looked very promising in the first half as they outgained the Bills 268 yards to 95.

But despite their early success they only went into halftime with a 13-10 lead. From this point on, it was a virtual chess match with both teams going back and forth. Buffalo took a 30-23 lead with 8:54 left after a Fred Jackson kick return gave the Bill’s offense great field position. Quarterback Trent Edwards found Josh Reed twice for 16 and 11 yards to set up a fresh set of downs at the 18 yard line. They then hit the ground game running with two separate runs from Jackson, scoring the final touchdown from 8 yards out.

Denver got one more opportunity to win the game at home when they forced the Bills to punt late in the fourth quarter. With an empty backfield, Jay Cutler and the Broncos reached the Bills 15 where on fourth and 5, cornerback Reggie Corner knocked the ball out of Brandon Stokley’s hands in the end zone to put a lock on the games outcome.

San Diego added insult to injury by defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-24 forcing a tie in the AFC West. Denver will travel to San Diego for the final game of their season next week with the winner clinching the division title.

Broncos Quarterback Jay Cutler finished with 359 yards passing, breaking Jake Plummer’s franchise record by way of 4,210 yards for the season. Bills quarterback Trent Edwards bounced back from an injury throwing 17 completions for 193 yards and a touchdown.
