Making the Cut – Who sits behind Jay??

The Denver Broncos will open training camp next month with a quiet question surrounding the most important position on the club.  What is that question?  It probably sounds sounds something like this “What the (expletive) are we going to do if something happens to starting QB Jay Cutler?” Now granted the Broncos coaching staff, players, and fans would rather not find out an answer to that question.  However, it is a valid one…..what if something should happen to Jay Cutler, the 2nd year Rocket-armed QB from Vanderbilt.  What if he get’s hurt?  Or worse, what if he is ineffective?  The Broncos will go into training camp with Cutler followed by:  Free Agent signee Patrick Ramsey, 2006 Undrafted Free Agent Darrell Hackney & 2002 Undrafted Free Agent Preston Parsons.  If you listen really hard you can faintly hear “Paging Tommy Maddox” somewhere in the distance.

Ramsey, almost for sure, will be the primary back-up to Cutler.  The former 1st round pick has had, to say the least, an under-whelming career.  Ramsey has started 24 games in 5 years throwing for 34 touchdowns and 29 interceptions while completing 58% of his passes for 5,649 yards.  After Ramsey there is nothing much else to say.  Darrell Hackney was a 2006 UDFA out of UAB and Preston Parsons was a 2002 UDFA out of Northern Arizona.  If either of those two are running the Broncos offense at any point this season you might as well start to research the upcoming 2008 NFL draft next spring.

There is no question Cutler has amazing upside, but if something should happen along the way things could become a little tense for the Broncos.  At the very least the QB position bears watching through-out training camp and the pre-season.
