Week 17 Prediction Article: San Diego Chargers @ Denver Broncos

Week 17 – Regular Season
San Diego Chargers @ Denver Broncos
Sunday, January 3, 2016 @ 4:25pm EST

Good morning and Happy New Year Broncos fans!  After a long and windy road, we have finally reached the final week of the 2015 regular season.  Thanks to a big win by the Broncos last week against the Bengals, Denver has punched their ticket to the 2015 playoffs, but they still have plenty to play for.

Denver currently sits in the 2nd seed for the tournament, however, seeding is far from guaranteed.

  • If Denver wins, they will hold on to at least the #2 seed.
  • If Denver wins and New England loses to Miami, Denver will take over the #1 seed and the road to the Super Bowl will come through the Rockies.
  • If Denver loses and Kansas City wins, Denver will drop to a wild card and the Chiefs would win the division.
  • If Denver loses, Kansas City loses and the Bengals win, the Broncos would still win the division and end up with the #3 seed

The Broncos know they are in, but these playoffs started last week for the Broncos.  In a must-win game, Denver came out of the gates flat.  Trailing by 14 points in the first half, and 14-3 at halftime, the Broncos needed to make several adjustments, and they did just that.  Denver scored 14 unanswered points with a 3rd quarter touchdown from Brock Osweiler to Emmanuel Sanders, and a 4th quarter, 39 yard scamper by running back C.J. Anderson.  The Bengals tied the game late in the 4th quarter and Brock and the Denver offense put kicker Brandon McManus in a good situation to win the ball game.  McManus lined up for the kick and ridiculously shanked the kicked wide left.  In overtime, the Broncos won the toss and elected to receive (unlike the Patriots).  On the first drive of overtime, Brock led the offense down the field once more, and set Brandon McManus up for the game winner.  This one was from 37 yards and McManus nailed it.  After a botched snap and a fumble recovery by Demarcus Ware on the ensuing drive, the Broncos ticket to the 2015 playoffs was officially punched.

Today, Denver plays host to the San Diego Chargers.  The Chargers come into this game in last place in the AFC West with absolutely nothing to play for.  The Broncos will look to avoid a “trap game” loss and hold on to the first-round bye in the playoffs.  By the time of the opening kickoff in Denver, the Broncos and their fans will already know if the #1 seed is attainable.  The Miami Dolphins will be playing host to the Patriots in a game that is scheduled to start at 1pm EST.  Barring overtime, Denver will know all of the possible things that could come out of the final determination of this game.

Demaryius Thomas can join some amazing, elite company today.  With 13 receiving yards in today’s game, Thomas will join Jerry Rice, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Chad Johnson as the only receivers in NFL history to have four straight seasons with 90 receptions, 1200 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Thank you Broncos, and fans of BroncosGab for another great season.  I will see you guys in a couple of weeks after Denver has had their rest during the bye-week.  Go bring home that #1 seed!

Final Score Prediction

San Diego Chargers – 10

Denver Broncos – 27
