Mays suspended one game on hit on Texans’ Schaub

As was to be expected, Denver Broncos linebacker Joe Mays was suspended one game and fined $50,000 for his crushing hit on Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub on Sunday; NFL.com and NFL Network‘s Albert Scheer were the first to report the transaction.

As a result, Mays cannot practice this week or even show up at the team’s practice facilities or stadium during the duration of the suspension.

During the Texans’ 31-25 win over the Broncos last Sunday, Mays cracked a helmet-to-helmet hit on Schaub, knocking off Schaub’s helmet and taking a piece of his earlobe with him. Schaub would miss a play, but would return.

According to Broncos head coach John Fox:

“I know this: He didn’t do it intentionally to hurt him. That’s not Joe Mays. That’s not what we teach. It’s accidental. Playing football.”

Mays has already said that he would appeal the suspension.
