John Elway’s words Monday about QB Tim Tebow should give a little idea what the direction the Broncos QB spot will go in for 2012.
Elway gave Tebow a “sorta round about” vote of confidence about being the QB for the 2012 season, stating that Tebow would be the the starter entering training camp.
“Well, I think Tim’s earned the right to be the starting quarterback going into training camp next year,” Elway declared at the beginning of a 40-minute news conference in which 24 of the 47 questions were about Tebow.
“I think he made some good strides this year,” Elway said. “He obviously played very well against Pittsburgh and played very well in a lot of football games.”
So Elway says that Tebow will be the starter going into training camp – but what about the season? And if he means he’ll be the stater going into camp, what direction will Denver go in terms of bringing in competition?
Tebow played a magnificent game against the Steelers in the wild card game, but recall the game against the Pats in the divisional round, as well as the three games entering the playoffs.
He threw for less than 40 percent, less than 600 yards in the four losses, and just one TD with four picks. Sure he struck lightening in a bottle vs the Steelers, but can he play better over 16 games of a season?
Tebow is a great human being, there’s no question to that. But he simply is not a good long term NFL QB. That was proven in four of the last five games he played, and it would be even more discovered if he gets the starting job starting 2012 and plays a whole season.
Elway may have backed himself into a corner today, but there’s no question that he could come to regret thinking long term that he’s the QB answer for Denver. The team can’t sit back and wait, they have to bring in legit competition for Tebow starting this offseason.
Otherwise, the 2012 season will be a very long one for Denver and its fans.
