Report: Arizona Interested in Trying to Grab QB Kyle Orton

KTVK in Arizona reports that the Cards may take a long look at Broncos veteran QB Kyle Orton as a QB they may want to target for a possible trade.

It’s time to play guess who’ll be the Cardinals quarterback next season and according to a source they have a new contestant. The Channel 3 sports department has learned that the Cardinals have had preliminary contact with the Broncos about the availability of Kyle Orton. A source tells 3TV’s Tim Ring, the discussions would not be categorized as serious but the Broncos believe the Cardinals have an interest in Orton as a “Plan B” if they can’t work out a deal for Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Kevin Kolb. Orton has thrown 71 touchdown passes in a five-year career in Denver and Chicago.

    Hello Bronco fans,

Let’s assume Denver can work out a trade for Orton, and we receive in return, say a 3rd round pick in 2012 draft. I would consider that win for this franchise, as we still have holes to fill, and that pick, or another pick, would probably go to back up QB anyway, unless Denver goes the way of a seasoned Vet. Orton obviously wouldn’t be excited about being the back up in Denver, and you can bet Tebow will win the job based on merit and hard work. You win in this league with guys like Tim Tebow, they make guys around them better, something I have still yet to see Orton do during his career. Plus, if you look at that 17 point come back win against the Texans late in the year, do you think Orton could have DREAMED of doing something like that? The defense got excited by Tebow’s leadership, and the offense wanted to make play’s for him, that’s what makes a QB special, but he still has a long way to go to get that level.

Holes on this team that next year’s 3rd round pick could go to fill:

    1. Defensive Tackle: OK, so we didn’t address this position in the draft, and we may just nibble on Free Agents in addressing the position later this off season. The 2012 has some DT prospects to get excited about, including Jorrel Worthy (a top ten pick as of right now, something I hope we don’t have), and Jared Crick, a little under sized for the position, but has play making talent and a relentless motor.

    2. Corner: OK, so we have the reliable Champ Bailey. Who else? Goodman may not make the team starting in 2012 as age is expected to catch up to him. Perrish Cox has bigger worries than the football field, he must avoid legal problems, which may come his way with a court case upcoming later in the year. Also, corner is one of the more injury prone positions, so you can never have enough corners.

    3. Running Back: In John Fox’s offenses, you need a power back, and Moreno can be a complimentary back, but he can’t carry the load by himself for many reasons, one being his injury tendencies. So, look for Denver to try and make a splash with Deangelo Williams, who would be the perfect back for this offense, not only in helping with our big play issues, but our ability to score in the red zone. However, look at last year, when Tampa Bay scored big with Blount, who was all world to end the year, he was an undrafted free agent out of Oregon. We can go with an under the radar personnel move here, or go for the big splash, either way, this is something that we should address in Free Agency this season.

After our draft, we can look back and say we improved out LB corp, TE group (which was pitiful last year), DE, RT and of course, Safety. So see Broncos fans, we are only a few positions away from being a contender, throw in Tebow’s development (any potential success depends on that), and we could make some improvements in 2011 and with another good draft and a few key free agents, we could be playoff bound in 2012 and beyond, and take control back of the AFC West.

    Get excited Broncos fans!!!!

    -Ben
