Breakdown of a Busy Third Day of the Draft for the Broncos breaks down day three for the Broncos, and gives their take on some background on the players the team picked.

Round 4, Pick 11 (108) (From 49ers) Quinton Carter DB 6’1″ 208 Oklahoma 6.1 Video

Pick Analysis: The Broncos’ safeties are long in the tooth, so it was necessary for the team to grab Carter with this selection. He gives them a big, physical safety with good ball skills and instincts. He will team with Rahim Moore to give the Broncos a dynamic young safety tandem for the future.

Round 4, Pick 32 (129) (From Packers) Julius Thomas TE 6’5″ 246 Portland St. 4.5 Video

Pick Analysis: The Broncos nab a fantastic athlete with the selection of Thomas. He is a former basketball player with strong hands and ball skills. He isn’t a finished product at this point, but he could develop into a matchup nightmare as a pro due to his athleticism.

Round 6, Pick 24 (189) (From Saints through Patriots) Mike Mohamed LB 6’3″ 239 California 3.4

Pick Analysis: Mohamed will be sure to work hard and study the Broncos’ defense so he can find a way to help a Broncos’ defense that needs it.

Round 7, Pick 1 (204) (From Panthers through Packers) Virgil Green TE 6’3″ 249 Nevada 5.7

Pick Analysis: Medical issues caused Green to slide all the way to the seventh round, but he is an incredible talent. If he stays healthy, he could be a steal for the Broncos.

Round 7, Pick 44 (247) (Compensatory Selection) Jeremy Beal DL 6’2″ 262 Oklahoma 5.9

Pick Analysis: The fact that Denver selected Beal could make his chances of making the team slimmer, as he was better suited for a 3-4, but the Broncos need all the help they can get on defense. They might find a place for him to fit.

    Bronco Fans,

This was a FANTASTIC draft, and I must admit, I had my doubts. If you look at the day two and day three draft picks, we may have hit on ALL the players, though I do think one of the TE’s and Mike Mohammad may end up being depth type guys and special team guys (nothing wrong with that).

The great teams shore up the line of scrimmage, but it doesn’t happen in one draft. Orlando Franklin shores up the starting OL with Ryan Harris expected to leave town. I know the DL was ignored, other than Beal, who garnered some consideration by teams much earlier than the 7th round for his ability to get to the quarterback, as evidenced by his 28 or so sacks at Oklahoma during his college career. Jorrel Worthy or Jared Crick I would imagine will be front and center for Denver going into next years draft class, unless Tebow flops (which I don’t expect). They are the two premiere DT prospects in next year’s draft class.

If you look at the great teams, they have a franchise quarterback, focus on the line of scrimmage, playmaking talent on both offense and defense at skill positions, and make game changing plays (sacks, interceptions), as well as, score in the red zone, instead of settling for FG’s. To me, a few of these area’s were obvious problems for Denver, but this draft helped to secure play making talent and alleviate some of those problems. Plus, with Tebow’s expected climb not only up the depth chart, but also his game day production, this team could make some SMALL strides this year, I still think they are a 6 win team.

But, two years of free agent additions, and another draft class, along with undrafted free agents, and this could be a team that makes a division title push for 2012 and the years to follow, especially if Tebow hits, and Miller/Dumerville can harass QB’s.

Hold your heads high Bronco fan’s, one more mediocre year, and we should be able to compete with the big boys in 2012 and beyond, especially with Manning and Brady aging and the new powers to be looking to take advantage.
