Broncos fall flat in London losing to 49ers 24-16

The San Fran 49ers threw a former 3rd string QB at the Broncos Sunday in London, and he did more than enough to beat the reeling Broncos 24-16 to put Denver at 2-6 in a season falling apart.

Troy Smith played a mistake-free game in his debut for the 49ers and led the team to victory at London’s Wembley Stadium. Seeing action in his first NFL game of this season, Smith completed 12 of 19 passes for 196 yards and 1 touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown.

The first half of the game started out slow both teams and the 49ers had a 3-0 lead heading into halftime. In the second half, the teams made things interesting for the British fans in attendance. The scoring started with the Broncos in the third quarter on a Tim Tebow 1-yard touchdown run. After another Broncos score on a Matt Prater field goal, Smith would have a 1-yard touchdown run of his own to tie the game at 10 apiece.

Smith’s touchdown run would be the first of three touchdown drives for the Niners. The second touchdown was a 28-yard pass from Smith to Crabtree. Frank Gore would make the game 24-10 on a 3-yard run with just less than four minutes remaining.

Gore finished the game with 118 rushing yards. The Broncos defense is simply playing too soft, and has fallen totally apart the last two weeks in losses to the Raiders and now 49ers.

Orton was 28-for-40 for 369 yards with a TD and a pick, but the Broncos offense was ineffective against the Niners for most of the afternoon.

Knowshon Moreno had 11 rushes for 40 yards. The Broncos have the bye next week and will have the Chiefs at home in two weeks.
