Tebow Fits Bill For McDaniels

Josh Mcdaniels has stated on many occasions that he wants a “smart, tough and physical” team, so the selection of Tim Tebow should come as no surprise. Even Tebow’s biggest critics agree he has all of those attributes. Tebow exudes a profound confidence that he can play quarterback in the NFL. Maybe even more profound is the confidence McDaniels is exuding in believing he can groom Tebow into a star.

Everyone knows about Tebow being the first sophomore to win the Heisman trophy and the two national championships, but what seem to get lost are his stats. Many are convinced Tebow can’t be successful with his unorthodox throwing motion, even though that same motion helped Tebow throw 83 TD passes and complete over 67% of his passes in his 3 seasons as the full time starter at the University of Florida. Now we’ve often heard of offensive systems making an average player look great, examples like Andre Ware, David Klingler and Tim Couch have proved this. Can it be in Tebow’s case the system he ran for coach Urban Myer at Florida, the spread option, might somehow be making a great player look average?

Much is talked about the spread option offense, Tebow being almost exclusively in the shotgun and all of the talent surrounding him at Florida. Which all seem to supersede his great stats as a passer and his superb win-loss record of 36-6 in the SEC. Where I think the doubt of Tebow being successful in the NFL all stems from is the rushing duties that are placed on the quarterback in the spread offense. Tebow was definitely an almost unstoppable force as a runner in college. He won’t be nearly as effective in the NFL at running the ball, but I don’t think McDaniels has plans to have Tebow running power sweeps off tackle.

One thing is for certain, the length of McDaniels tenure as head coach of the Broncos will be determined by the success of Tebow. My guess is McDaniels is comfortable with his future in the hands of the smart, tough and physical Tebow.
