He scammed thousands of clients, including former Broncos Rod Smith, Terrell Davis, and Steve Atwater, then committed suicide Saturday outside Atlanta. Phony hedge-fund founder Kirk Wright hanged himself at the Union City Jail. On Wednesday, a jury convicted Wright for bilking investors out of 150-million dollars. He was facing more than 700 years in prison. The Securities and Exchange Commission says Atwater put almost three-million of his own money into Wright’s scheme. Then Atwater talked Smith, Davis, and other NFL players into investing an additional 15-million. Atwater has sued the NFL and the players union, claiming they endorsed the fraud. The union filed a countersuit denying responsibility and insisting it never certifies financial advisers.
