Broncos to Take A Hard Look at WR’s in Free Agency

Berrian

With free agency kicking off next month, look for the Broncos to be active and to try and go out and get some help following their disappointing 2007.  One area of need will be wide out, especially if the team does not bring back Javon Walker, who has asked for a trade.  The Colorado Springs Gazette is putting out a list of possible options for the Broncos when it comes to wide receivers in free agency, with the breakdown going like this:

Chicago - Bernard Berrian
New Orleans - David Patten
Arizona  - Bryant Johnson
Seattle - D.J. Hackett

Berrian is the biggest prize of the bunch, but of course he also is going to cost the most, and the biggest thing about him is that he sometimes has hands of stone.  As far as Patten goes, he is aging, but can still get down the field.  Bryant Johnson is a guy that might benefit from leaving the Cards and getting a shot as a solid #2 guy.  Hackett is another guy that could use a change of scenery, and likely will look for greener pastures out of Seattle.

So while the Broncos have plenty of areas to look at on both sides of the ball, you can mark it down now that some of their free agent cash will be spent at this position at some point next month.

Finally someone is talking about DJ Hackett. Shanahan said today that Walker will need microfacture surgery in the next 2 years. I don’t know how he knows that, but assuming it is true the Broncos need a veteran WR to pair with Marshall. Hackett knows the West Coast offensive and and he’s still relatively young. If they have to go to the draft for a WR then we’re looking at 9-7 at best. The have to get Hackett.
