Broncos Control Their Own Fate

                              Denver Broncos

One can only imagine what the mindset of the Denver Broncos would be if they were in any other division than the weak AFC West right now.  As it is, they’re tied with the San Diego Chargers for the division lead.  Based on the body of work as of late – victories over divisional rival Kansas City and Tennessee – there may be room for some optimism.

The remaining schedule looks to be in Denver’s favor as they face the following teams: Chicago, Oakland, Kansas City, Houston, San Diego and Minnesota.  With the exception of San Diego and perhaps Houston, they should go 4-2.  On the flip side, San Diego’s schedule looks like this: Baltimore, Kansas City, Tennessee, Detroit, Denver and Oakland.  At first glance, it appears that San Diego has a marginally tougher balance of schedule.

Another thing working Denver’s favor is the return of wide receiver Javon Walker.  A healthy Walker, combined with WR Brandon Marshall and #3 WR Brandon Stokely, makes the Broncos’ offense that more potent.  And while it is true that their running game as of late has been quirky, they should be OK there for the balance of the season.  The defense is slowly improving (thanks to big efforts by their secondary).

While the Broncos – like most teams in the NFL do – have issues, they’re relatively minor in comparison to issues that the Chargers are currently dealing with.  San Diego’s issues are more along the lines of complacency (they went 14-2 last season, after all), head coach Norv Turner (they miss Marty Schottenheimer despite what anyone claims), and last but certainly not least – the Napoleon of the West Coast – Chargers general manager A.J. Smith.  Assuming Denver wins the winnable games, they should win the AFC West with a 9-7 record.
