Broncos Looking to Move Warren

Defensive tackle Gerard Warren didn’t make the trip to San Francisco on Sunday as the team is looking to deal him. Two NFL sources confirmed Warren, who started the past two seasons for the Broncos, is on the trading block. The Broncos would pick up part of his salary, which was trimmed during the off-season.

Warren, who had 51 tackles and 2 ½ sacks last season, has become a non-factor because he is not considered a good fit for Jim Bates’ system where tackles are to balance and leverage their position, holding the point at the line of scrimmage with contact and containment. Warren is more of a tackle who can rush and disrupt plays in the backfield.

Should Warren be dealt, Jimmy Kennedy would start alongside Sam Adams at defensive tackle. Veteran Alvin McKinley and rookie Marcus Thomas (Florida) would also move up the depth chart. Warren has been bothered by a turf toe injury that bothered him last season. However, sources clarified that health was not the reason he did not make the trip. He likely will be traded within the week for a future draft pick. Miami and Indianapolis are among the teams who are in need of a veteran defensive tackle.
